Developing a model for flood risk and costs (2020-2021) (2020-2021).

In 2020-2021, LNH water has contributed to the development of DTU's new and free damage cost model ‘DTU SkadesØkonomi’ (DTU DamageCosts), which can be used to assess costs related to flooding from cloudbursts and storm surges. What is special to the model is that it can be used to calculate the financial claims at a very detailed geographical level and for various sectors. The model allows the municipalities to obtain an overview of what happens if water hits buildings, businesses, transport, cultural and historical values, nature, people and other values. Hence, the model provides a good foundation when planning for climate change adaptation as the model can show where local actions should be taken, where flooding causes great damage, and where good solutions can be found. It is an improvement compared to existing models, which typically only calculate insurance claims for flooded of buildings, and do not make an actual economic damage calculation sector by sector. The model was initially developed to calculate damage from floods from the sea, but with a minor adjustment on the building site, it can also be used to calculate damage from cloudbursts. Regarding cloudbursts it has just become a legal requirement to make detailed sector-based economic damage calculations in Denmark. The DTU SkadesØkonomi model has been developed by DTU Management in collaboration with LNH water, and is part of a larger research and innovation project called the COHERENT project, which is funded by the Innovation Fund.

Skadesmodellen er udviklet af DTU Management i samarbejde med LNH water, og er et led i et større forsknings- og innovationsprojekt kaldet COHERENT-projektet, der er finansieret af Innovationsfonden.

Teaching in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) at DTU Space (2020).

In 2020, LNH water taught the MSc courses 30530 Geographic information systems and 30532 Introduction to digital mapping and GIS at DTU Space. Both courses are introductory courses to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The course uses QGIS, which is an open source software for analyzing geographic data. The courses include lectures on general concepts and theories as well as practical exercises with the most common tools for spatial analysis with different types of geographical data, including raster / vector data, satellite data and geodata databases. The students who follow the GIS courses come primarily from DTU Environment, DTU Construction, DTU Management and from foreign universities. Approx. 40 students were enrolled on each of the two courses. The course language is English.

Area plans for Holte, Dronningård and Øverød (2019).

The municipality of Rudersdal has decided that the sewer system in Holte, Dronninggård and Øverød must be climate-adapted to prevent combined sewer overflows to the lakes during heavy rains. The sewers are therefore separated, and the landowners must lay an extra pipe for rainwater on their own land. This reduces the risk of flooding and stops a continuous source of freshwater pollution. In 2019, LNH water prepared area plans for priority areas in relation to climate adaptation and initiatives for the environment. This work was conducted in close collaboration with the local utility; Novafos. The efforts in the area plan will, among other things, improve the environmental condition in several lakes (e.g.Søllerød Sø, Vejlesø and Furesøen). Hydraulic analysis of the drainage systems has been conducted and form the basis for political decisions on the future drainage strategies. The project includes hydraulic model calculations, climate adaptation, environmental loads, damage calculations and cost-benefit calculations. LNH water has been responsible for and performed all hydraulic calculations regarding climate adaptation and environmental impact. The project has been carried out in good collaboration with Novafos and Birgit Paludan, and deals with hydraulic modeling for drainage systems, taking into account the environment, climate adaptation and landscape conditions. Authority issues have been taken into account. Moreover, material has been prepared to support the communication between the municipality and Novafos and their stakeholders.

Implementation of model-building system at the catchments within HOFOR utility (2016-2019).

In the period between 2016- 2019 LNH water worked closely with HOFOR utility to implement hydraulic models for HOFOR's drainage catchments. The work included treatment plants in the drainage model as well as boundary models for all treatment plants. LNH water has made advisor standards and a model manual. Moreover, LNH Water has assisted HOFOR using our model-building system and how to update the model from standardized registration data (DANDAS). Teaching has also been provided in e.g. hydraulic modeling and data management. The project shows LNH Water's competences in hydraulic modeling and data handling, in-depth understanding of HOFOR's hydraulic models and ability to work closely with HOFOR over a number of years.
